ARC Research Hub for Tiger Shrimp Breeding

The Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Research Hub  for Advanced Prawn Breeding is a consortium involving researchers and industry from:

James Cook University

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO)

Australian Genome Research Facility

University of Sydney

Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie

Seafarms Group

The goal of the Hub is to develop and transfer to the farmed tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) industry the capacity to benefit from advanced genomic-informed breeding programs.  It will achieve this through:

• Developing comprehensive genomic resources for the tiger shrimp including a draft genome

• Acquiring necessary quantitative genetic information for traits along with the development of

industrial-scale diseasetesting and phenotypic data collection processes

• Developing genetic algorithms to allow a multi-trait genomic selection approach to be practiced

in breeding programs.

The Hub will work with industry to acquire the essential genetic and phenotypic data to instigate highly efficient multi-trait selective breeding programs for the tiger shrimp.  It will bring together world-leading animal geneticists, research and service providers, and Australia’s largest shrimp farm, and gather the genomic resources, commercial phenotypic data, and apply cutting-edge genetic and genomic selection methodologies, leading to the most advanced and industry transformative improvement program for any shrimp species globally.
