Australia

Commodities Group and Seafarms

Ian Trahar, executive chairman of Commodities Group/Seafarms, said there is little doubt that growing tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is going to be the key to his company’s future.  His goal is to industrialize shrimp farming at scale, drive down the cost of production and use the best science and farm management to produce a better, healthier and more sustainable product.  He has ambitious plans for Project Sea Dragon, a massive 10,000-hectare farm in northern Australia that will produce sashimi grade shrimp for export year round.  In Australia today, imported Chinese shrimp with Australian garlic and parsley can be marketed as a product of Australia.  Trahar hopes to change that.
