Exporters Stop Buying Freshwater Prawns

Exporters of freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), fearing action from western buyers, have temporarily stopped buying prawns because middlemen are injecting them with “chemicals” to increase their weight.

“We have...asked all our members not to buy prawns from November 15–30, 2015, due to the rising incidences of pushing chemicals and many other substances into them,” said Md Golam Mostafa, senior vice president of the Bangladesh Frozen Food Exporters Association (BFFEA).  “There’ll be no compromise regarding the quality.  We’ve taken this decision unanimously to say ‘no’ to a bad practice,” said the BFFEA leader.

Prawns are farmed in in southwestern Bangladesh and around Chittagong in eastern Bangladesh.
