New Government Funds

On March 16, 2015, Syed Arif Azad, Director General of The Department of Fisheries, said the government will grant $3.9 million for the development of shrimp farming infrastructure in Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat and Cox’s Bazar, the country’s main shrimp farming regions.  The money will mainly be used for re-excavation of silted-up canals to increase availability of salt water on shrimp farms, locally known as ghers.  In a preliminary trial where canals were re-excavated and ponds deepened, shrimp production rose 48% to 552 kilogram per hectare.

An e-traceability system is also in the process of development.
