No Shrimp Farming on Ag Land

The finalized draft of the Department of the Environment’s National Environment Policy contains a provision that would prevent shrimp farming on agricultural land.

“We have already finalized the draft policy.  It will soon be placed in the cabinet for approval,” said Dr. Sultan Ahmed, director of natural resource management for the Department of Environment.  He said DoE introduced the initiative because of shrimp farming’s negative effect on the environment, ecology and agricultural land.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, executive director of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, praised the government initiative, but expressed concern over the future of the provision because it would clash with existing fisheries policy that promotes shrimp farming.
