Camanor Produtos Marinhos Wins GAA Award

On October 19, 2015, the Global Aquaculture Alliance presented the winner of this year’s Preferred Freezer Services Global Aquaculture Innovation and Leadership Award to Brazil’s Camanor Produtos Marinhos, Ltda., a 30-year-old shrimp company in northeast Brazil that utilizes a high-density, zero-exchange, zero-discharge, biofloc farming system to produce shrimp.  Camanor Director Werner Jost calls the system “AquaScience®.”  The high-density, land-based facility in Natal, Brazil, recycles its water and doesn’t use any chemicals or antibiotics.  The controlled environment eliminates potential pathogens that disrupt and sometimes decimate harvests.

According to Jost, the traditional shrimp farm uses 19,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of shrimp; AquaScience uses only 240 liters.

AquaScience is a land-based facility with 14 hectares of production area.  The facility currently produces 1,500 metric tons of shrimp a year.  By contrast, Camanor’s traditional low-density outdoor ponds produce 800 tons a year.  Jost said another 14-hectare AquaScience facility should be ready by spring 2016.

Average production, with shrimp stocked at 300 per square meter, is 40 tons per hectare, which can be repeated up to three times a year.  Camanor’s best production for one crop was 45.6 tons per hectare.  The effluent from the shrimp ponds is denitrified and then introduced into tilapia ponds.  The tilapia, which are more or less a byproduct, are sold into local markets.

“In 10 years time, there will be no more low-density farms,” Jost said.  “It’s like the poultry business: You gain on efficiency in an incredible way.  So we are thinking, in three years time, we can produce 450 tons per hectare per year.  It’s amazing.”
