Central America

Production Statistics

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Honduras ranks first as a producer of farmed shrimp in Central America and Nicaragua ranks second.  Honduras produced over 30,000 metric tons of shrimp worth $205 million in 2013, and Nicaragua produced 24,500 metric tons, worth $150 million.  The third largest producer of farmed shrimp in the region was Guatemala, which produced 17,000 metric tons, worth over $80 million.

Armando Segura, president of the Fisheries Chamber of Nicaragua (CAPENIC), attributes the growth in revenues to an improvement in international prices and, to a lesser extent, the increase in volume shipped abroad.
