Guolian May Bring Shrimp Farming to the USA

To meet the demand for high-end, live shrimp, Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products is rapidly expanding its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) farms in China.  It plans to produce 20,000 metric tons of shrimp from the RAS system it established in 2016, and it is currently expanding, said Jeff Sedacca, who is now president of Guolian’s USA division, Sunnyvale Seafood.

In addition to looking at acquisitions of shrimp farms in Asia and Latin America, Sedacca said there was a possibility that Guolian would also establish RAS shrimp farms in the United States.  “Both the regulatory and the government environments are becoming friendlier for USA aquaculture.  I think the market is ready for it also.  We are looking at some of the smaller operations.  I am personally involved in looking at some small-scale [US shrimp] companies we can consolidate and build on.”

In 2016, Guolian announced a $72 million investment in its China RAS shrimp farms and, in 2017, it plans to produce 5,000 metric tons from the farms, up from 1,000 tons in 2016.  In 2018, the plan is for a 10,000-ton harvest, increasing to 20,000 tons in 2019/2020, when a “newly confirmed expansion project comes online”, said Sedacca.  “This is a high-end product for the Chinese market.  The shrimp is sold live and fresh on ice, with plans for high-end, frozen shrimp in the future,” said Sedacca.  “The market is absorbing whatever is being produced now.  The development of more capacity is happening pretty aggressively,” he said.
