Costa Rica

Shrimp Farm For Sale

La Parrita, a 168-hectare shrimp farm with 23 ponds occupying 84 hectares, is for sale for $6 million by owner Philip Pruett.  The farm produces around 240 metric tons a year when stocked at 15 postlarvae per meter, although Pruett says production could easily be brought up to 400 tons with aerators.  Pruett said, “It depends how you want to run it. You could do three cycles a year and decide to put in more aerators for more intensive farming and consequently more production.”  Pruett gets his seedstock from a hatchery in Costa Rica that imports nauplii from Ecuador.  Processing, when needed, is done by Rainbow Export Processing, a subsidiary of German shrimp importer Ristic.  Most of the shrimp goes to the national market, said Pruett, since Costa Ricans eat a lot of seafood and have the disposable income to afford it.
