Seajoy Stops Shrimp Eyestalk Ablation

Brad Price (, vice president of operations and sales at the Seajoy Group, which has integrated shrimp farming operations in Central America, reports:

In keeping with its philosophy of sustainable shrimp practices—including animal welfare—the Seajoy Group has converted all its larvae production laboratories to using only non-ablated female shrimp.  Trials over the past few years have shown only some of the benefits of non-ablated production, but once the hurdles of commercial production were overcome, further benefits became apparent.

Seajoy continues to upgrade its production methodologies in an ongoing commitment to provide customers with high quality sustainable shrimp.  Continued research on the beneficial results of production without ablation will be carried out via a PHD program jointly sponsored with Seajoy by Sterling University, Lyons Seafood and the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA).  All parties would like to advance the use of non-ablated female shrimp at an industry level and invite anyone interested in more information to visit
