Shrimp Exports Set Record in the First Half of 2014

Ecuador exported 350 million pounds of shrimp in the first half of 2014, ten percent more than in the same period in 2013, and projections suggest that 2014 will close with the shipment of about 500 million pounds, a record figure that exceeds those achieved during the “shrimp boom” before whitespot hit the country, stressed the president of the National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA), Jose Antonio Camposano.

In terms of income generation, CNA statistics indicate that between January and April 2014, Ecuadorian shrimp exports reached a value exceeding $754 million.

Cristhian Fontaine, president of Pedernales Shrimp Association in Manabi Province on the central coast, says Ecuador could produce even more shrimp if it got government loans to expand its shrimp farms.

The industry promotes its product at trade fairs, restaurants and supermarkets, and it hopes to create a national brand.  According to the Minister of Foreign Trade, Francisco Rivadeneira, this last idea could be very effective.
