Reports Big Numbers

The National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA) estimates that the shrimp sector will close 2014 with production of 540 million pounds of production, up 25 percent over 2013, according to José Camposano, CNA president.  The value of the crop will jump to $2.5 billion from 2013’s value of $1.8 billion, an increase of 39%.

The shrimp industry employs about 180,000 people on at least 3,000 farms covering some 210,000 hectares.

In five of the first eight months of 2014, shrimp managed to displace bananas as the country’s leading export, according to statistics from the Central Bank of Ecuador.
