Final News on EMS from GOAL 2013

At GOAL 2013, the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s annual conference, this year in Paris, France, Robins McIntosh, a senior executive at Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF), said that growing tilapia in the same ponds as shrimp and using freshwater to lower salinities can reduce the chance of EMS.

Also speaking at the GOAL conference, Dr. Donald Lightner, the famed shrimp pathologist from the University of Arizona, said his group was working on the development of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for identifying EMS that he hoped would lead to diagnostic kits that could be used to test broodstock for EMS.  Then EMS positive broodstock could be destroyed or placed on a regime of approved antibiotics, in an attempt to clear them of EMS.
