Questions about USA Shrimp Farming

Mladen Nikolov (mladen@umich.edu) writes: I am considering starting a small, indoor shrimp farm in Germany and want to know what your readers think of this idea.  When I read about indoor shrimp farms in the USA and then look for more information on them, I often discover that they are no longer in business.  The same thing seems to be happening in Europe.

Why are the farms disappearing?

Is it because technology was not good enough a few years ago and expensive failures just happened?

Is the technology better now?

Was the problem purely bad planning and bad marketing?

Did they fail because of low-quality postlarvae, as Eric from Belgium stated?

Please respond to Mladen Nikolov (mladen@umich.edu), but if you would like me to consider using your response on Shrimp News, please send a copy to me as well.  Bob Rosenberry (bob@shrimpnews.com).
