Shrimp Farms and Hatcheries Hit with Tidal Waves

As a result of storms in the southern hemisphere, tidal waves have caused extensive damage to shrimp farms and hatcheries around the Gulf of Fonseca.  Several hatcheries have been destroyed in Marcovia, about six kilometers west of Choluteca.  So far, the companies that reported damage are Biomarsur, Oro Larva, Tropical and Granjas Marinas.  Argentina Diaz, owner of Biomarsur, lost a hatchery and a huge amount of money.  “I lost a whole laboratory where thankfully no [shrimp larvae] had been stocked yet, but the whole infrastructure was lost, which implies a millionaire loss,” she regretted.

Farmed shrimp is one of Honduras’ biggest exports, generating $252 million in 2014, up 9% from 2013.
