Shrimp Prices Up 50%

Since this time last year, the price that processors pay for small farmed shrimp has risen 50%.  Currently processor pay farmers between $1.96 and $2.21 a pound for 12-gram shrimp, while last year they paid between $1.23 and $1.47 a pound.  Increased demand from Mexico has caused the price increase.  According to the Central Bank of Honduras, farmed shrimp exports generated $167.2 million in 2012, and in 2013, they are expected to generate between $180 and $190 million, mainly due to an improvement in prices and increased production.
