Andhra Pradesh—Six Mobile Labs to Test for Disease

Because 28 percent of the shrimp crop is lost due to diseases in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the Fishery Department is introducing six, mobile, diagnostic laboratories to help farmers combat disease.  Fisheries commissioner Ram Shankar Naik said the government will operate three of the six labs, and the other three will be handed over to the private sector.  Once the mobile labs are ready, they will visit shrimp farms, test their shrimp and educated the farmers on the steps to be taken to protect their crops.  “The laboratories will be on a par with international standards,” Naik said, adding that they would be fully functional by 2016.

At present, there are already eight stationery laboratories in the state, but only two of them are fully functional and three of them are partially functional.  Two more stationery labs will be established.

There are 40,000 shrimp farmers in Andhra Pradesh!
