IHHN Virus in Broodstock from Blue Genetics

On December 29, 2015, a consignment of specific pathogen free Penaeus vannamei broodstock sent to Hybrid Ebi Hatcheries Private, Ltd., from Blue Genetics/Mexico was found to be positive for IHHNV virus by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA).  The consignment was sent to India’s Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) for further checking.  CIBA confirmed that the samples it tested were all positive for IHHNV and decided to destroy the total shipment of 440 broodstock.  The samples it tested were negative for whitespot.

RGCA/CIBA Recommendations: The samples should be preserved for future reference.  The rearing water should be decontaminated and the quarantine facility (cubicle, tanks and equipment) must be thoroughly disinfected (chlorination, fumigation).  The staff operating this particular cubicle must be restricted and should not work in other cubicles to avoid transmission to other cubicles.  Infected animals under quarantine should be disposed of by sterilization using an approved autoclave, followed by incineration or deep burial.  Extreme care should be exercised and water from this cubicle should not de discharged before appropriate treatment and giving sufficient time for disinfection because the water could transmit the virus to the whole facility.  The cubicle should be shut and kept in dry condition after decontamination for at least two to three weeks.
