Odisha—Illegal Shrimp Farms in Park

In the state of Odisha, illegal shrimp farms have been set-up in nearly 400 acres of the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary.  Local governments and the Forest Department have turned a blind eye to the illegal farms.

The shrimp farmers build earthen dykes that restrict the flow of tidal water into the sanctuary.  The dykes also cause flooding in neighboring field crops, and chemicals in the dykes damage flora and fauna in the region.
