Penaeus vannamei Expansion in Kerala

Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) plans to form farmers’ groups to spread Penaeus vannamei shrimp farming in the state of Kerala and help farmers export shrimp without intermediaries.  Agencies like the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture and Coastal Aquaculture Authority are cooperating with KUFOS on the vannamei project.

As part of its efforts, KUFOS also plans to organize an aqua exhibition and offer training programs.  The aqua exhibition will be held on August 20 and 21, 2015.  The exhibition will help potential shrimp farmers get together with exporters and feed suppliers.

KUFOS will help the farmers get licenses from the Coastal Aquaculture Authority in Chennai for P. vannamei farming.  For better access to international markets, KUFOS also plans to help farmers get Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification.

KUFOS believes farmers will be able to start farming vannamei without large investments.  A seafood export group has expressed willingness to offer the farmers vannamei seedstock and feed on a buy-back basis.
