Research—Whitespot and Vibrio

 

From Abstract: After a brief initial success in India, Penaeus vannamei is experiencing serious problems due to microbial diseases.  In this study, researchers conducted a microbiological investigation into the problem of persistent mortalities on selected P. vannamei farms on the southeastern coast of India.  The infected shrimps were positive for the whitespot syndrome virus (WSSV), though no visible whitespots were present on the animals. The shrimps were heavily colonized by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which was isolated from the hepatopancreas, gills and the body surface.  The pond water, despite being low saline groundwater, harbored large numbers of V. parahaemolyticus and other Vibrio species, and V. parahaemolyticus isolated from P. vannamei were resistant to β-lactam antibiotics and cephalosporins.  The results strongly suggest that the persistent mortalities of P. vannamei were due to a co-infection by V. parahaemolyticus and WSSV.

 

Shrimp News: The abstract of this study did not say the strain of V. parahaemolyticus that the researchers found was the strain that causes early mortality syndrome (EMS), and previous reports out of India have said that there was no EMS in the country.
