Tamil Nadu—Shrimp Disease Report

Durai Balasubramanian (email durai.balasubramanian@myport.ac.uk) reports: Because of disease problems, farmers in the state of Tamil Nadu are finding it difficult to grow white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) beyond 40 days.  The problem could be Taura virus or early mortality syndrome (EMS)—but laboratories have only confirmed whitespot virus.  I think India is going to face a tough challenge in 2014.   Production volume will definitely crash around 40 percent or more in 2014 compared to 2013.
