The BMR Group

The BMR Group, India’s largest shrimp seedstock producer (Penaeus vannamei and P. monodon), is the newest sustaining member of the Global Aquaculture Alliance.  BMR owns and operates eight hatcheries and several low-density shrimp farms on 200 hectares in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.  Several of the facilities are certified under the GAA’s Best Aquaculture Practices Program.

In October 2014, BMR completed construction of a 6,000-square-meter, state-of-the-art shrimp-processing facility.  Future plans include construction of what would be the largest feed mill in India.  The new facilities will allow BMR to maintain control of the full supply chain, creating the only four-star, BAP-certified shrimp operation in India.

In 2013, BMR produced six billion shrimp postlarvae and supplied one-third of the country’s small independent farmers.  In addition to seedstock, BMR offers technical support and biosecurity procedures that help other farmers raise their shrimp more responsibly.

BMR also practices social responsibility by supplying free medical treatment and computer classes to the small villages near its facilities.  In addition, it provides dedicated areas on its farms for the local community to grow rice for personal consumption.

BMR Group was the first shrimp processing company to export head on vannamei to Europe.  Exports for 2013-14 were $18.8 million, up 200% from 2012-13.
