Export Prices for Shrimp Are Dropping

Saut Hutagalung, director general of marketing and fishery product processing at the Indonesia’s Maritime Affairs and Fishery Ministry, said the export price for shrimp has declined from $9.15 a kilogram in September 2013 to $7.04 in October 2013.

Saut called the decline a positive step because the high prices were not sustainable.  “That price was too high and did not sustain the industry.  So it needs to find a balance, otherwise producers will continue reaping profits while the processing industry is suffering,” he said.  When the export price for shrimp rose, farmers’ profits rocketed 300 percent.  Saut said production costs for shrimps currently stood at $2.64 per kilogram.  He predicted that shrimp prices would hover above $6.00 per kilogram through the end of 2013.
