Indonesia

White Feces Disease

Although Indonesia has not been hit by early mortality syndrome (EMS) like Thailand, China, Malaysia and Vietnam, reports of white feces disease, which has been seen in Thailand in recent years, are emerging.  As a result, farmers harvest large quantities of small shrimp and prices drop because so much product hits the market at one time.  Processors are reluctant to buy until the prices hit bottom and until they have firm orders.

The low prices, caused by the emergency harvests, means Indonesia shrimp has been able to compete with shrimp from India, Indonesia and Ecuador.

Price for large sizes, especially peeled and deveined tails, have increased due to the shortage of larger shrimp.
