Who Is Billy Setio?

January 1, 2017

I graduated from the University of Portland (Oregon, USA) in 1985 with a degree in Electrical Engineer and from City University (Portland, Oregon, USA) in 1986 with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

After that, I went back home to Indonesia and helped my father run a Penaeus monodon hatchery, named “Ndaru Laut,” in Banyuwangi, East Java.  I stayed in the family business until 1993 and then joined a big company specializing in consumer goods as a management trainee.  After I finished my training, I worked at a candy manufacturing plant for 12 years, eventually becoming Managing Director of the plant.  In 2005, I resigned to get back into the shrimp hatchery business, at a time when P. vannamei was just getting established in Indonesia.

From 2007 to 2013, I managed a 10-hectare, joint-venture shrimp farm and also built my own two-hectare-growout pond to test the postlarvae from my hatchery.  It has been very challenging.  I learned by doing, including all the accounting and finance.

In early 2016, I decided to expand the hatchery, so that I could produce my own nauplii.  We import broodstock from Hawaii.  Now, at the end of 2016, we manage one breeding center for nauplii and three hatcheries that produce PLs located in Banyuwangi, Besuki and Lamongan, all in eastern Java and all using the name of “Ndaru Laut”.  We plan to expand our hatcheries and growout facilities in the near future.
