The Maruha Nichiro Group Will Not Abandon Thai Shrimp Farming

In its December 2013 quarterly report, The Maruha Nichiro Group, the world’s largest marketer of seafood, said it had continued losses from its Asia and Oceania Division, which purchases and distributes shrimp, but it is unwavering in its commitment to Thai shrimp farming.  Its the largest trader of shrimp in Japan and has links with all sizes of shrimp farms in Thailand.

While its Asia and Oceania Division has struggled, the company’s marine products trading unit, involved in trading shrimp and other seafood, not from the group’s fisheries and aquaculture businesses, has produced strong results, partly because of the high shrimp prices.
