At the Integrated Lobster Aquaculture Park in Tuaran, Sabah, East Malaysia, Aqua Technologies, Sdn., Bhd., operates the first commercial spiny lobster hatchery in the world. It has successfully bred Panulirus ornatus at the hatchery and stocked juveniles into sea cages in Semporna, Sabah, East Malaysia.

Aqua Technologies is a joint venture between Nanyang Nexus, Sdn., Bhd., and a state owned Yayasan Sabah’s subsidiary, Inno Fisheries, Sdn., Bhd.   Nanyang Nexus is a company jointly owned by Ever Nexus, Sdn., Bhd., and Darden Aquasciences, Sdn., Bhd. (a subsidiary of Fortune 500 company Darden Restaurants, Inc).

Dr. Shahridan Faiez, president and chief executive officer of Aqua Technologies, said: “Only a handful of people in the world have the knowledge and technology to successfully culture the critical eleven stages and undergo metamorphosis from larvae...to juvenile lobster.  Without state and Federal Government support, none of this would have been possible,”

The global market for lobsters is valued at over $4 billion a year.
