QL Resources' 900-Hectare Project

QL Resources, Bhd., a multi-national agro-food corporation, plans to spend over $35 million in the next two years, much of it to expand its shrimp farming business, including $3.5 million for the purchase of a 900-acre parcel of land in Kota Buruk, Sabah, for a shrimp farm.  Currently, the 900-acre parcel is pending transfer approval.

In the past year, QL Resources has rolled out a shrimp farm in Kudat, Sabah, started a shrimp $6 million processing plant in Tuaran, Sabah, and for $6 million acquired a 60% interest in Kembang Subur Holdings, Bhd., a shrimp hatchery in Kuantan, Pahang.

Dr. Chia Song Kun, managing director, said, “We will only move on to that 900-acre project once we make ourselves comfortable in the existing phase of our shrimp...business.”

In 2014, QL Resources’ shrimp farming business yielded a profit of about $48 million, which the group hopes to double this year.
