Sabah—Big New Project

The Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority plans to develop a 1,000-hectare shrimp farm and a processing plant in Pitas, Sabah, East Malaysia.  The farm will have 318 ponds and annual production of an estimated 10,000 metric tons of shrimp.  Investment through a private company will kick-start the project’s efforts.  The project is expected to attract $75 million in private investment over the next seven years.

This project is meant to improve local household income through aquaculture-based economic development and is expected to create 1,200 new jobs, 400 on the shrimp farm and 800 in the processing plant.  The Department of Environment approved the project and granted it an environment permit in November 2013.

Sea cucumber farming will also be part of the project.
