CIAD Research with INVE’s Products against EMS

J. Jaime Muñoz M. (j.munoz@inveaquaculture.com), reports: Attached you will find a summary of a work done at CIAD Mazatlán México with INVE products used against EMS:

At CIAD Mazatlán, México, the combination of biosecure measures, the stocking of strong and healthy PLs and the management of the rearing conditions through the control of feeding, sediment, water quality and microbial communities is believed to be a key issue in controlling EMS/AHPND outbreaks.

Researchers evaluated the activity of a biocide (Sanocare PUR) and probiotic strains of (Sanolife Bacillus spp.) against pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains.  These strains were isolated from diseased shrimp in Sinaloa during 2013 and were proven to cause the disease in laboratory conditions.  All tests were performed at CIAD’s Mazatlán Unit for Aquaculture in Sinaloa, Mexico.

1. Sanocare PUR

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for Sanocare PUR was determined for four strains of pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus (strains M0605, M0802, M0903 and M0904) by diluting them in liquid in 96-well plates.  The average MIC for all four Vibrio strains was 1,000 μg/L, or 1 part per million of Sanocare PUR.  However, an effect on the growth rate of the V. parahaemolyticus strains was already observed at concentrations of 0.1ppm!

2. Sanolife Bacillus.

The capacity of Bacillus strains to inhibit the growth of nine pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains (M0603, M0605; M0606, M0607, M0801, M0802, M0803, M0904, and M0905) and one non-pathogenic strain (M0903) was estimated by cross-streaking on tryptone soy agar with NaCl and without the addition of NaCl, 2.5% and 0.55 final concentration, respectively.  One strain of Sanolife Bacillus was able to produce an inhibition halo in all V. parahaemolyticus strains tested with a mean radius of 7.0 and 8.0 mm after 24 hours in 2.0% and 0.5% salinity, respectively.

This strain of Bacillus is included at a high ratio in the commercial line of Sanolife probiotics.
