Mexico

Mexico has EMS/AHPNS

Mexico contends that the mass mortalities on shrimp farms in the northwest states of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit are caused by a multifactorial disease that involves more than 16 bacterial strains isolated from shrimp stomach tissue.  At the 6th Meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Aquatic Animal Health, in Mérida, Yucatán, México, on August 22–23 2013, however, Dr. Donald Lightner, the famed shrimp pathologist from the University of Arizona in the United States, gave a slide presentation titled “Documentation of an Emerging Disease (Early Mortality Syndrome) in SE Asia and Mexico”!

The meeting was sponsored by Office of International des Epizooties (OIE), created to fight animal diseases at the global level.  In May 2003, its name was changed to the World Organization for Animal Health, but it continues to use the historical acronym “OIE”.

Dr. Lightner’s presentation contained 41 slides, many of them micrographs of shrimp tissue.  Below I have reproduced slides 1, 3, 8, 32 and 33.  I asked Dr. Lightner for comments on slides 32 and 33.  He said,  “Slide 32 compares an agent from SE Asia to one from Mexico.  Both cause EMS/AHPND.  Slide 33 is a summary of work done in my lab to demonstrate that a Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolate from Mexico causes the same disease in SE Asia.”

Then I asked him, "Does Mexico have EMS/AHPNS?. He said, "Yes".
