Importing Shrimp Because of EMS


As a result of early mortality syndrome (EMS) on its farms, Mexico is now importing more shrimp than it exports.


Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Belize are all selling more shrimp to Mexico as a result of the EMS epidemic.  Imports from Ecuador totaled $10.8 million in the first half of 2014, up from only $400,000 during the first half of 2013.


Mexico’s shrimp production consists of 68% farmed and 32% wild-caught.  90% of the farmed shrimp are exported, mostly to the United States.


According to the Agriculture Secretariat, 20% of consumers prefer small shrimp, 50% medium shrimp and 30% large shrimp.
