Subsidies for Shrimp Farmers in Northwest Mexico

To ensure that shrimp farmers in the state of Sinaloa stock their ponds, Mario Aguilar Sanchez, the National Commissionaire of Aquaculture and Fisheries, offered shrimp farmers a 50 percent discount on the cost of postlarvae for the first crop of 2014.  Altogether, shrimp farmers in the states of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit will receive subsidies of $10.6 million because of the devastating mortalities from early mortality syndrome in 2013.  The shrimp farming industries in those three states employ 12,000 people.
