Vibrios, Biofloc and Penaeus vannamei

From Abstract: In this study, researchers compared biofloc and clear water systems for rearing juvenile Penaeus vannamei.  They also evaluated the Vibrios in the systems.  Survival rates were recorded and a probiotic was tested under both conditions.  Daily growth rate was higher in the biofloc system than in the clear water system, and survivals in both systems increased significantly when a probiotic was included in the diet.  Vibrios from the hepatopancreas and the water did not differ much between the two systems; however, a novel group of Vibrio strains was found to be unique to the biofloc system.  No high level lesions were observed in shrimp tissues from the biofloc/probiotic treatment, which suggests that the probiotic contributed to homeostasis and prevented an outbreak of opportunistic pathogenic species.
