North Korea

Correction—Freshwater Prawns, Not Freshwater Lobsters

Xiaowei Zhou (Xiaowei.Zhou@fao.org), an Aquaculture Statistician at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Italy, reports that the “freshwater lobsters” mentioned in yesterday’s item on North Korea were actually freshwater prawns:

Xiaowei Zhou said: The “freshwater lobsters” that failed to be mass produced in North Korea were actually the giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii).  The soft-shell turtle farm was modeled after the greenhouse turtle farms commonly seen in Zhejiang Province in Eastern China.  Several years ago turtle farmers from Zhejiang were hired as consultants/technicians in North Korea.
