Shrimp Exports

Panama exported shrimp worth $76.6 million in 2013, 84.9 percent more than in 2012, when its shrimp exports were worth $40.4 million.  The upward trend continued in the first two months of 2014, with shrimp exports worth $7 million, compared to $3.7 million in 2012.  Shrimp ranks second among Panamanian export products, behind bananas, and its farmed shrimp that accounts for most of the increases.

Most of the shrimp was exported to Asia, where local production has declined as a result of early mortality syndrome (EMS).  Shrimp farmers intend to increase their presence in the United States and have begun to test markets in Kuwait and South Africa.
