Mud Crab Congress


The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s Aquaculture Department and the University of the Philippines Visayas will sponsor the First National Mud Crab Congress on November 16-18, 2015, in Iloilo City, on Panay Island.  Congress chair Emilia Quinitio said the activity will bring together about 300 scientists, industry practitioners and stakeholders to discuss the latest developments and current status of mud crab farming in the Philippines.


The Philippines is the second largest producer of mud crabs in the world.  In 2012, it produced an estimated 16,360 tons valued at $114,236,000.


Delegates to the mud crab congress will visit the Development Center’s facilities in in Iloilo and Guimaras.


Funding for the congress was provided by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, part Philippine Department of Science and Technology.
