Plans Shrimp Production Increase of 25% in 2014

On December 17, 2013, Asis Perez, Director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), predicted that Philippine exports of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) would increase 25 percent in 2014.  Perez cited an expansion in the shrimp aquaculture industry in the Bicol Region, Quezon, Bataan and General Santos City.  Currently, about 35 percent of the Philippine shrimp supply comes from General Santos City.

Perez said the private sector has expressed interest in producing more shrimp postlarvae, adding, “At present, we are...importing our parent stock, which cost $30 each...from Hawaii.”
