$86 for Four Farmed Mitten Crabs

Chiang Ching-shu owns the Chingshan Chinese Mitten Crab Farm in New Taipei City.  He said the quality of the crabs at his farm is the result of a lot of work and top quality feed.  He feeds his crabs mackerel, corn, wheat and herring for ten months and does not use any antibiotics or growth hormones.  He has seven ponds totaling one hectare.

Before sales commence each year, Chiang sends a sample of his crabs to SGS Co, a certification organization in Switzerland, and to the New Taipei City Department of Agriculture for inspection.

The meat from male mitten crabs is tenderer than the meat from the females, but the females have both meat and eggs.

The price for six crabs per kilo is $61.50; the price for five crabs per kilo is $73.82; and the price for four crabs per kilo is $86.12.  [Shrimp News: like shrimp, size matters].
