Government Approves New Standards for Shrimp Farming

The Thai Cabinet has approved draft regulations to ensure the high quality and safety of its farmed shrimp.  Following a weekly Cabinet meeting, Deputy Government Spokesperson Major General Weerachon Sukhontapatipak announced that the Cabinet agreed to ministerial regulations and standards for the production of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).

Weerachon pointed out that marine shrimp are one of Thailand’s most important export products and that the shrimp farming industry had recently been plagued by early mortality syndrome.

In an effort to restore confidence in the quality and safety of Thai shrimp, he said the new regulations clearly establish high standards that shrimp farmers will have to follow.
