CP Foods Will Layoff 1,200 People at Shrimp Processing Plant

Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) will layoff 1,196 subcontracted Myanmar workers at its shrimp processing plant in Samut Sakhon’s Muang District for 30 days and pay them $1.4 million (75% of their normal wages) in compensation, according to Panich Chitchang, director-general of the Thai Labor Protection and Welfare Department, who said CPF had encountered shortages of raw materials due to early mortality syndrome.  Panich said, “The company has set a benchmark by showing responsibility and paying compensation on behalf of the subcontractor which could not afford to do so,” adding the company had decided to let the Myanmar workers go in order to shift its operations to other fields of business!
