The last time a crab that large appeared in Phuket was 30 to 40 years ago.  The mud crab population around Phuket was significantly reduced by the destruction of mangroves and the spread of shrimp farming, but now local organizations and government agencies have had considerable success in bring the crabs back by restoring the mangroves.
