Recovering Mangroves from Poaching Shrimp Farmers

September 12, 2014

Thailand’s Marine and Coastal Resources Department plans to reclaim at least 48,000 hectares of encroached mangroves within the next five years.  Many of the mangroves were transformed into shrimp farms, and some of the farms have already been abandoned. Department director-general Chonlatid Suraswadi said his department would work closely with local people and educate them on how best to improve their shrimp farms with environmentally friendly technology that will not have any negative impacts on their communities.
