Shrimp Prices Plunge

According to the Thai Department of Fisheries, shrimp prices have plunged as a result of a drop in export orders.

On March 10, 2014, Niwat Suthemeechaikul, The Director General of the Department, of Fisheries, said the price of shrimp was $5.40 per kilogram, a significant fall from the average January/February price of $6.79 to $7.26 a kilogram.  Mr. Niwat thinks the decrease in global demand has prompted local suppliers to reduce their stocks.

Shrimp prices are expected to return to normal in May or June 2014, the Director General added.  The sector should be able to produce an ample supply of shrimp during the period.  Mr. Niwat also said farmers would have time to eliminate EMS before their next crop and supply the market with healthy, properly raised shrimps.
