Shrimp Prices Rise on EMS News

During the first quarter of 2013, farm gate prices for whole shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) rose above any levels seen in the past two years.  Farmers got $5.58 per kilogram for 60-count shrimp and $5.27 per kilogram for 70-count shrimp.

Then, at the end of the quarter, the price jumped to $6.65-$6.92 for 60-count shrimp and to $6.14-$6.48 for 70-count shrimp.

The rise in prices has been attributed to a drop in production caused by early mortality syndrome (EMS).
