Massachusetts’ First Shrimp Farm

The Sky 8 Shrimp Farm in Stoughton, Massachusetts, USA, which got started in November 2012, hopes to have its first crop on the market in March or April 2013.  Local entrepreneur James Tran founded Sky 8, which flew in the seedstock for its first crop from a hatchery in the Florida Keys.  The farm’s founding partners have already put about $200,000 into the business to lease indoor space for its fiberglass tanks, water pumps and heating and filtration equipment.  Peter Howard, a consultant for Sky 8, says the company is currently seeking another $300,000 in capital, which it will use to lease more space and purchase more postlarvae.  Sky 8 hopes to get from $12 to $15 per pound for its shrimp from local restaurants.
