Texas Farmed Shrimp Production in 2012

In 2012, farmed shrimp production in Texas was up 800,000 pounds over 2011.  In 2012, seven shrimp farms and two research facilities in Texas, occupying 908 acres of ponds, produced 2,921,616 pounds of farmed shrimp worth $7,011,878, selling it for an average price of $2.40 a pound.  The farms stocked 116 million postlarvae and 62% of them were harvested.

Alejandro Herrera, a shrimp farmer in Mexico, across the border from McAllen, Texas, has completed an 80-acre shrimp farm in Lasara (near Raymondville), Texas.  He plans to stock that farm in 2013.
