Florida—Florida Organic Aquaculture Expansion

In April 2015, Florida Organic Aquaculture, LLC (FOA), broke ground on its second full-size production building, which is estimated to produce more than one million pounds of shrimp a year when completed.  Initial sales of Florida Organic Aquaculture’s, “Happy Healthy Shrimp”, its brand name for Pacific white shrimp, began in the summer of 2014, and demand for it has already outpaced supply.

FOA plans to complete construction of its second production building by the fall of 2015.  The fully insulated pole barn structure will cover an expansive 4.2 acres and is expected to double the company’s shrimp production.

This expansion, financed with a USA Department of Agriculture loan, will provide an additional ten jobs to residents in the city of Fellsmere and the surrounding communities.  The first stocking of the new facility is planned for the fall of 2015.

In anticipation of future expansion, the company established hatchery and nursery facilities on-site in 2014.  The hatchery and nursery are large enough to support up to four production buildings.  In early April 2015, the hatchery marked an important milestone, as the first on-site shrimp spawn took place and the first generation of “Happy Healthy Shrimp” to be raised entirely at their Fellsmere facility were born!

The next phase of Florida Organic Aquaculture’s expansion will begin in 2016.
