The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii—Shrimp Broodstock

The business section of Hawaii’s Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii (NELHA), a state agency that’s part of the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, is where two of Hawaii’s largest shrimp broodstock facilities—Shrimp Improvement Systems and Moana Technologieslocate their production facilities.

NELHA says that some have referred to Hawaii as the new “shrimp broodstock capital of the world” with the potential to account for 60 percent of worldwide production of shrimp broodstock.

David Leong, president of Shrimp Improvement Systems, said, “We work with companies in Asia as well as the Americas and firmly believe these relationships are an important factor in helping SIS develop a continuously improved product year after year.  These relationships have helped SIS and our partners to continue to expand the global shrimp aquaculture industry.”
